Six people from Capital Policy Research and Consultancy Institute and expert group from Hungary visited NCC on December 14th 2022 and were received by Commissioner Lin, Lih-Yun, Commissioner Wang, Jiang-Jia and Commissioner Wang, Yi-Hui. The two sides exchanged extensive views on media regulation issues.
First, an NCC representative briefly introduced NCC and the recent development of Taiwan's media, and explained how NCC responds to disinformation. Being a broadcasting authority, NCC is responsible for regulating the fact-checking of news channels, and calls on the industry to uphold the professionalism of journalism and avoid spreading false information and causing panic among the public.
The NCC representative further stated that Article 27 of the Satellite Broadcasting Act stipulates relevant regulations on fact-checking, and there must be no situation where the production and broadcast of news violates the principle of fact-checking and damages the public interest. Furthermore, NCC can require the industry to establish a self-regulation mechanism and accept social supervision through evaluation and license renewal review operations.
Dr. Péter Krekó, a director of Political Capital Policy Research and Consultancy Institute explained the purpose of leading a delegation to visit Taiwan and the issues of concern to relevant agencies. Director Krekó shared the current situation of the media in Hungary, saying that most of them are pro-government media, and under the influence of promoting pro-Russian policies. It has been noted that a great deal of social media in Hungary spread false information for profits, causing serious harm to society. Director Krekó emphasized that website administrators should enact self-disciplinary measures and supervise the content, and the public should carefully verify the authenticity of the contents.
Both sides agreed that the media should continue to deliver fair and objective information in order to reduce the spread of false information and the harm to society. The two sides conducted a pleasant exchange and expressed desire for further exchanges in the future.
