National Communications Commission (NCC) Chairperson Yaw-Shyang Chen accompanied by Commissioner Jiang-Jia Wang, Commissioner Yi-Hui Wang, Commissioner Chung-Shu Chen, Secretary General Wen-Che Huang and representatives from related departments of NCC welcomed Minister of Information and Communication Technologies of Paraguay Gustavo Emigdio Villate Samaniego, President of Taiwan-Paraguay Polytechnic University and Presidential Economic Advisor Jorge Daniel Duarte Rolón and Ministerial Advisor Horacio José Caniza Vierci, on March 21 of 2024. Both parties discussed developments of 5G telecommunications and anti-misinformation issues.

Noting the Paraguayan delegation as a diplomatic ally of Taiwan, Chairperson Yaw-Shyang Chen sincerely welcomed the guests and shared recent developments of 5G telecommunications, including 5G licensing, facilitating local operators to accelerate deployment of 5G infrastructures, as well as encouraging them to share infrastructures as a result of the amendments of specific regulations, and requiring companies to establish a more secure and reliable internet. The parties also discussed the challenge from the spread of misinformation in and the anti-misinformation approaches taken in Taiwan.

Minister Gustavo Emigdio Villate Samaniego and the delegation expressed their gratitude for the meeting, sharing an overview of telecommunications market in Paraguay and the authorities of Ministry of Information and Communication Technologies of Paraguay. The delegation indicated that although Paraguay does not face the challenge of misinformation on the same scale as Taiwan, the Paraguay authorities still plan to adopt similar measures to address the issue in advance. The delegation also expressed expectations to explore more opportunities for collaboration and further discussions between Taiwan and Paraguay regulatory agencies in the future.
