Are electromagnetic waves from base stations and mobile phones safe?

For most people today, the mobile phone is an indispensable tool they must bring with them when they leave home. Asides from communications, many use their devices for payments, financial management, navigation, education, entertainment, and so on. However, despite this convenience, some may be concerned whether the electromagnetic waves emitting from mobile phones and base stations are detrimental to human health.

When considering this issue, it is important first to realize that electromagnetic waves are all around us and are being emitted from anything that is electrically charged, meaning any device either plugged in or with batteries, emits electromagnetic radiation. As a matter of fact, electromagnetic waves are emitted from the Earth itself (being a large electromagnetic field), the sun and even people.

This wide range of electromagnetic waves can be divided two kinds. The first, ionizing radiation, such as X-rays and gamma rays, are known to cause damage to human cells; in contrast, the second, non-ionizing radiation, found in infrared rays and radio waves, which are used for mobile phone communications, do not cause damage to human cells. This has also been verified by the World Health Organization, which in 2011 and 2014 published Document No. 193 stating that electromagnetic waves from mobile phones do not damage biological cells and molecules; neither do they cause adverse health effects. A similar statement is included in the 2006 publication of Document No. 304.

At present, the electromagnetic wave control standards for base stations in Taiwan are based on the recommended values determined by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) by the Environmental Protection Agency of the Executive Yuan ensuring that electromagnetic waves emitted from them comply with international safety standards
