As part of American Institute in Taiwan’s three-day Global Cooperation and Training Framework meeting, focusing on network security and emerging technologies from May 28 to 30, a 5G security roundtable was jointly held with the NCC on May 29. The discussions were moderated by NCC Commissioner Sun Yea-Li and interviewees included Hsu Chia-Lin, the Deputy Director of Executive Yuan Department of Cyber Security, Su Si-Hon, the Senior Technical Specialist of NCC Department of Network Infrastructure, Ma Hong-Chan, the Senior Executive Vice President of Chunghwa Telecom Co., Herman Ra, the Executive Vice President of Far EasTone Telecom Co., Tom Koh, Vice President of Taiwan Mobile Co, as well as representatives from national supervisory agencies or relevant units. The roundtable provided an opportunity for attendees to exchange views on 5G security communication issues.
　　After expressing her sincere welcome to the visiting delegates from overseas, Commissioner Sun Yea-Li outlined the current situation of broadband network development and the construction of 5G network in Taiwan and emphasized that 5G will be a key driving force for Taiwan to promote the digital nation, innovation and economic prosperity; she also outlined certain potential challenges of security and supervision that may be presented by the new infrastructure and design of the 5G network. Meanwhile, Senior Technical Specialist, Su Si-Hon took the opportunity to introduce the current supervision framework of NCC, the difference between 4G and 5G architectures, and explain how 5G supervision will differ from past practices. The 5G security strategy, including the adjustments of cyber security related laws and regulations, the promotion IoT security certification ecosystem, intelligence sharing and study of unknown threats were then outlined by Deputy Director Hsu Chia-Lin.
　　The Senior Executive Vice President Ma Hong-Chan of Chunghwa Telecom outlined the company’s IoT security such as security testing, protection and monitoring while Executive Vice President Herman Ra shared Far EasTone Telecom’s security protection mechanism, which aims to protect the overall infrastructure through multi-layer architecture such as denial, clean up, filtering and interception. Potential 5G security challenges were also outlined. Finally, Vice President Tom Koh introduced the future impact of 5G security, the 5G standards improvements and the role of future operators.
　　After the presentations, the attendees exchanged opinions on relevant topics; extensive discussion then took place for approximately 100 minutes. After conclusion of the roundtable discussions, the attendees were led by Commissioners Sun Yea-Li and Teng Wei-Chung to visit the National Communications and Cyber Security Center(NCCSC).
