Dual Excitement of Media Industrial Exchanges of Southbound Project and Collaboration with Islamic Countries – The NCC presents the 5th annual international conference of “Organization of Islamic Cooperation Broadcasting Regulatory Authority Forum”中文
On February 21st, 2017, the Indonesian KPI held the 5th annual international conference of “Organization of Islamic Cooperation Broadcasting Regulatory Authority Forum” (IBRAF) at the provincial capital of Bandung in Jawa Barat. IBRAF, which is responsible for protecting Islamic rights and promoting cooperation among broadcasting authorities, raised the subject “Media literacy and the vision to achieve media for world harmony” and invited representatives from more than 30 countries in Asia and Africa to participate. Furthermore, broadcasting authorities from non-Islamic countries, like the Korea Communication Commission (KCC) and NCC, were invited to seek additional cooperation in the field of media.
At the opening event on February 22nd, representatives from each attending country shared their own experience on the topic “Media for World Harmony”. The particular issue of “fake news” in Taiwan was the focus of several countries. Indonesian Minister of Maritime, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, and Malaysian Vice PM, Ahmad Zahid Mamidi, pointed out that so-called ISIS recruits new members through social media and independent broadcasts. Bugs and defects are common among the information on social media, and such false information with eye-catching material always spreads rapidly. Therefore, it is critical that the conventional media extract and edit information based on full inspection and balanced reporting. Each country should enhance self-regulatory media through both public involvement and media literacy education. Although the information of the international mainstream media is important, it would be a start for local interaction if the local media in each country can possess and shoulder its profession and responsibility for media literacy and provide ethically correct and meaningful news.
This was the first time that the NCC has attended this international conference as a rare opportunity and experience to interact with IBRAF, which is rarely reached by domestic media agencies. At the conference, committee member Jason Ho represented NCC and interacted with the governor of Jawa Province, KPI’s chief and committee member, Indonesian broadcasting business parties, and representatives from other countries and received a warm welcome from everyone. All representatives were comfortable with NCC’s attendance and expressed their desire for further exchanges in the future.
