Burkina Faso Minister of Culture, Tourism and Communication, Filippe SAVADOGO visits Chairperson Dr. Bonnie Peng

Burkina Faso Minister of Culture, Tourism and Communication, Mr. Filippe SAVADOGO and his colleagues, visited Taiwan from May 22 to May 27, 2009. During their stay, they paid a visit to NCC Chairperson, Dr. Bonnie Peng on May 26 (Tuesday), accompanied by H.E. Ambassador Jacques SAWADOGO.
Min. SAVADOGO described the media management authority of Burkina Faso, which is directed by twelve commissioners. Commissioners are recommended from private industry and serve three-year terms on a part-time basis, except the Chairperson. The media were previously controlled by the Burkina Faso Government but have recently been opened to private business after a surge in public opinion. Min. SAVADOGO noted that like many other nations, the liberalization of media in Burkina Faso has caused sudden changes in the market. Therefore, Min. SAVADOGO was keen to deepen understanding of Taiwan’s media management to better media policy planning.
Chairperson Peng stated that with regard to the operation of the media industry and its content, NCC always greatly respects the freedom of the industry. However, limited regulation of media content is necessary to protect and/or advance public welfare and prevent children and youths from being affected by inappropriate content.
Min SAVADOGO was also interested in how NCC facilitates the convergence of telecommunications and broadcasting, especially after learning NCC was established to better accommodate digital convergence. The cordial visit was well-communicated and concluded in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
