Under the guidance of the NCC and organized by the Telecom Technology Center (TTC), the Living the Vision Economic Forum took place on October 30, 2020. Experts from industry, academia and research institutions, both domestic and from overseas, were invited to discuss how 5G can empower the telecom industry in Taiwan to create new business models with other industries, leading to more innovative services in a post-pandemic era and advances in the foreseen digital transformation and digital economy.

Mr. Wei-Chung Teng, NCC commissioner and Mr. Zse-Hong Tsai, Executive Secretary of the Office of Science and Technology at Executive Yuan, delivered opening remarks at the forum. Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, the experts from overseas participated online or through prerecorded videos. Two keynote speeches and one panel discussion took place during the morning session. First, Mr. Heinz Bernold, partner and director at Boston Consulting Group (BCG), gave a speech entitled, “Realizing 5G’s Full Potential”, after which Mr. Ken Tsutsui, project leader of the 3D Atlas initiative at NTT DATA, presented his keynote speech “Digital and New Space Technology Transform Urban Innovation”. After the two keynote speeches, Mr. Zhang Yi-Jun, chief editorial writer at business weekly magazine, hosted a panel discussion, in which representatives from NTT DATA, FarEasTone Telecom, Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan star Telecom gathered together as panelists to explore views on the international trend of digital economy, how industries in Taiwan can continue to digitize their services and processing as means to more efficient services or reducing manufacturing costs.

During the afternoon session, four more keynote speeches were given, followed by another panel discussion. Ms. Helen Wong, director of product and partner strategy for Asia Pacific at Verizon Wireless, open the session with a talk entitled, ”Eight Currencies of 5G”. The following were 3 keynotes presented by domestic speakers: “Revolution Of Shopping Experience” by Mr. Jerry Ku from LINE corporation, “Applications of AIoT” by Mr. Sean Pien from Microsoft Taiwan, and ”Applications of Remote Service” by Mr. Joseph Wang from OSENSE Technology. The forum was wrapped up with a panel discussion hosted by Mr. Wen-Chung Guo, former NCC commissioner and economics professor at National Taipei University. Speakers from Microsoft Taiwan and OSENSE Technology, representatives from Taiwan mobile and Asia Pacific Telecom on the panel discussed potentials avenues for the digital economy to develop while being offset by the Covid 19 pandemic.

It was noted that since the telecom industry has already begun offering 5G services and the Telecommunications Management Act has come into force, Taiwan has established a more progressive regulatory environment for innovation and more efficient operating environment for businesses. Likewise, NCC remains committed to facilitating a universal and secure digital infrastructure, as well as a friendlier regulatory environment, to empower the telecom industry to continue to develop more innovative services, thereby promoting the digital economy.
