A delegation of the National Communications Commission (NCC), headed by Commissioner Chen, Chung-Shu, attended the Telecommunications and Media Forum (TMF) organized by the International Institute of Communications (IIC) in Washington, D.C. on December 13th and 14th. The event facilitated an exchange of views with regulatory authorities of communications and industry representatives and also helped the NCC delegation gain understanding of the latest industry trends with view to future policy planning and improving the regulatory framework in Taiwan, ultimately promoting industry growth and development.
After the IIC forum, NCC Commissioner Chen, Chung-Shu also visited the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on December 15. This visit followed the visit by FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr to Taiwan in early November this year and has provided a platform for substantive exchanges between the FCC and the NCC. It also demonstrates the willingness of both sides to proactively strengthen the relationship between the two authorities and seek opportunities for greater cooperation in the future.
As for the 2022 TMF hosted by IIC, topics included the planning and progress of the US communications policy, legislation and investment in broadband infrastructure, sustainable development, AI and cross-border data flow, etc. , all of which are of great importance, and can serve as a valuable reference for NCC when formulating future communications policies.
In addition to the members of the communications authorities, industry and academia, IIC also invited FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel to give a keynote speech, and April McClain-Delaney, Deputy Assistant Secretary, National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), U.S. Department of Commerce, as well as officials from Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration (ITA) and Barbados Broadcasting Authority. During the forum, Commissioner Chen also had the opportunity to hold a series of side meetings with the FCC chairwoman and the NTIA official.
