NCC Holds Industry-Government-Academia Conference on Media Coverage of Vote Tallying
In light of growing concerns over the coverage of vote tallying following the election on television news, which provided key information and real-time updates to the public, shaping public opinion––the National Communications Commission (NCC) organized the “Fact-Based Television and Media Coverage of Vote Tallying for the 16th President and Vice President and the 11th Legislative Yuan General Election” conference on February 6, 2024 with view to safeguarding public interests and the audience’s right to information. The conference was attended by experts and scholars, representatives from multiple television channel operators, as well as the Association of Terrestrial Television Networks, Satellite Television Broadcasting Association, Taiwan Media Watch Foundation, Taiwan FactCheck Center, and Central Election Commission, at the invitation of the NCC.

During the conference, the Association of Terrestrial Television Networks and the Satellite Television Broadcasting Association presented the self-regulation guidelines applicable to their members. TV station representatives shared insights into their reporting procedures for vote tallying, communication methods with the audience, and protocols for addressing errors and abnormalities. They also shared the timing of the first batch of vote reports and its plausibility. The Taiwan Media Watch Fund and the Taiwan FactCheck Center offered notes of observation and recommendations regarding election coverage. Similarly, the experts and scholars in attendance provided insights, to which the TV station representatives were given an opportunity to respond.
